Major players in Transport and logistics in Jamaica would have to be Seaboard Marine, and Seafreight, we also have DHL, and FEDEx as part of its logistical ground transport. Rail is not utilized on the island for mainstream transport.
Many business owners take on supply chain management and shipping and handling themselves. Thus trucks, vans and cars are heavily utilized. Most of the products are imported rather than exported.
The Advantage to this is that it allows complete control over the supply chain, which controls time of delivery, after delivery service and building of stronger relationships with the customer (The culture demands such) but the disadvantage to this is that transportation is primarily inefficient, on-time delivery is rare, and the risk of security of the products is extremely high.
This limits the competitiveness of manufacturers within Jamaica and reduces one’s competitiveness to the world.
